Tim--It took me a few tries to get used to the hydrostatic xmsn while mowing hills; if I don't ease off the hydro pedal (rather than pushing down as though giving more "gas"), my tractor tends to lug a bit. Backing off on the pedal slows down the tractor, raises torque (as I understand it, anyway) and definitely makes the mower happier.

The main difference is the hydro xmsn; then the deluxe seat (which is really excellent). Both are really great for loader work. Given the small cost differential I think it's a no-brainer, but that's just an opinion.

Based on my relatively modest knowledge, there are three categories of 3. hitch--Cat.0, Cat.1, and Cat.2. The vast majority of compact tractors have Cat.1 hitches. Cat.0 are found on garden-tractor-esque machines and Cat.2 are on the big honkers with GPS, CD players and seventy-'leven foot discs. So the vast majority of 3. implements are compatible with Category 1 hitches--and all Category 1 implements will fit any Category 1 3. hitch.

You've got a good price. I paid 20.5M for a 33D, 7308, ballasted R4s, 60" belly and a 60" Bush Hog (Razorback). May have overpaid a bit--then again, I've had a tractor for a month, and you haven't! <g>

As to the loader not being able to handle a bucket of gravel, IMHO that's a little silly, or the report pertained to a rig with some kind of mechanical failure. Although I haven't run out for a load of pea gravel, among the first things I did was move several full-to-the-brim buckets of fieldstone, packed in tight. The tractor didn't blink an eye, although I was certainly glad for the tire ballast. I have also used a "carry all" on the 3. for a couple of skids loaded high with stone, again without a complaint, and have moved buckets full of soil without the tractor even noticing.

As I recall, the point of the writer re. the pea gravel was that NH compacts were for people who wanted their wives to do the tractoring, and orange tractors were for he-men who used their tractors 24/7. Whatever; my F-150 with an automatic transmission is certainly lighter-duty than the F-250 stickshift it replaced, but frankly is a lot more useful for reasons like an extended cab, airbags, etc.--and is basically as capable on the back 30. To date, the 33D has done what I've asked with no beef at all, and, in fact, my wife is far more comfortable on it than on other compacts we've had. I assume the NH compacts are not best for everybody, but after a good bit of research, including driving various other colors, I found them best for us.

Al--that's the kind of information I was hoping for. The TPH splitters are appealing because they come right along with you and, as you point out, are a good bit cheaper. Does anybody have any negative experience on the hydraulic TPH splitters (which seem to be relatively unpopular, given they're being phased out by several mfrs)? A related, basic question which I'm not sure how to phrase--what is the relationship between hydrostatic drive, hydraulic power, and engine HP? Does the drain on HP and/or hydraulics depend on whether the tractor is moving (ie, hydrostatic system engaged) or standing still? A question the book Richard suggests probably answers: The hydraulic pump capacity on my NH 33D is reported as 7.6 gpm, while the "total pump flow" is listed as 12.2 gpm--what is the difference, and why is "flow" higher than "capacity"?

Took delivery last week on a '33D with a 7308, 60" belly and 60" bush hog. Although I think the '35 would have been useful in some situations and was very impressed with the value it offers, I drove one enough to conclude it was just bigger than I was comfortable with. The dealer I'd been negotiating with gave me a price ultimatum--not the way I believe in negotiating--and so I went across the nearby state line (OH to KY) and bought there. Not only was the second fellow's initial price a bit better than the "bottom line" at the first store, but the dealer ballasted the R4s and included 2 50lb. "suitcase" weights at no charge--all of which was a la carte at the first shop. The equipment all was delivered in good shape, and with (all) fluids full.

Having had a Yanmar with a loader in the past, I am especially impressed with the ease of on/off of the loader (great design, IMHO), and find the bungee cord more amusing than irritating. After six or so hours, I'm pleased with the machine, both as to capacity and as to fit and finish. It's a little bit finicky going into gear ranges, but that seems to be more a matter of learning the touch than any significant problem. My initial impression re. finish mowing, however, is that it's going to take awhile--certainly into next season--to get enough of a grasp of how the tractor works on slopes to feel comfortable.

Kevin--

Don't know about the Woods, but can't imagine ANY loader being easier to get on and off than the 7308. I used to have a Yanmar with a supposedly "quick" detach loader, and it sucked--had to use a block-and-tackle to the rafters more times than I'm happy remembering. But I'm negotiating for a tractor right now, so could you let me know the reasons for considering the Woods?
